High standards, a passion for winning, and a little fun along the way.

“Each step at the US Naval Academy offers opportunities to learn and serve. I’ve been excited and envious our oldest is taught sailing this summer. With his love for the sea, that can lead to lifelong explorations.

Even more, he’s now serving in the Academy’s Color Guard. This is teaching him, while leading others, to honor and never take for granted all our country provides us.

I’ve just started the book, The Hero Returns, of the French American Revolutionary Lafayette’s final journey to USA in 1824. Throughout, it speaks of both his love and revere for the young nation’s ideals he hoped to emulate, as well as the hope and promise of the country he fought to found.

Our oldest’s service will allow him and others to envision all this as well.” - John Hugh

Water Polo Camp in Malta. After Camp Alpine in Switzerland with Scouting USA, we sent our youngest on a plane to Malta for water polo. He has been lukewarm about this sport, but came home motivated to do drills and build his speed and endurance. It didn’t hurt that the older kids were cool and the seaside location was stunning. He loved the Italian guys breaking into his room with water guns in the middle of the night.

We live in a beautiful area outside Paris, and our kids get to explore some amazing locations - but we never want them to rest on privilege. They are juggling two, even three languages, in French school without the advantage of a French parent in the home. We ask them to do hard things - demanding sports, serve others when it’s inconvenient, share their faith, and seek after the one who is left out or lost.

Being missionaries is never about living the good life - it’s finding the good in the midst of struggle and difference. We are proud of our kids when they get on a plane at 13 years old and jump into the ocean when they feel exhausted. We know when they sleep in and miss the last practice before boarding the plane or come home with the worst sunburn ever seen, they are only human. - Linda

Service above self. Teamwork. Collaboration. These are values we have believed in and tried to instill in our family.

The United States Naval Academy takes them to another level.

We are very thankful and proud of Jack for making this decision, then earning the opportunity to serve.

Plebe summer is plebe summer though. Plebe is taken from plebians in Ancient Rome- lowest of the low on the totem poll.

Yet Jack seems to be having a grand time. He’s seeing these values come to life on a greater scale, for a greater purpose, ultimately his country.

It’s humbling and honoring to see good kids, young men and women, get formed and forged for service and ultimately some sacrifice.

Reading much Navy literature this summer. From The Caine Mutiny to The First Salute (about John Paul Jones and the beginnings of our Navy). Trying to do all I can to walk with Jack from afar, so plan to read all I can on the Navy.

Now it’s In Love and War by James & Sybil Stockdale. It’s their memoir together. He was an Annapolis graduate and Navy pilot, shot down over Vietnam. Was held hostage and tortured as a POW for 8 years. In this he writes about in the direst of days in that prison, how the Academy and his training formed him to serve, protect, and defend in every moment of those 8 years.

Small steps before greater ones though. Jack did make the US Navy Color Guard. 50 plebes were selected out of 200 who tried out. He is debating his athletic sport and trying a few.

We look forward to seeing him in a few weeks. And how he’s begun to be formed.- John Hugh
